Winter J. Smith
2025 Distinguished Service Award Winner
Winter J. Smith is a clinical professor in the department of clinical sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy. At her practice site, Medical City Plano Hospital in Plano, TX, she is an inpatient internal medicine clinical pharmacist; preceptor for introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences; preceptor for PGY1 pharmacy residency learning experiences; and PGY1 pharmacy residency program coordinator.
Smith began her academic pharmacy career in 2005 at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and OU Medical Center, where she was a faculty member and inpatient internal medicine clinical pharmacist. Upon relocating to Dallas in 2016, she joined the faculty at the Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy and subsequently, the Fisch College of Pharmacy. Her classroom teaching is in the areas of drug information retrieval, drug literature evaluation, therapeutic drug monitoring, infectious diseases, and cardiology. Her current scholarship, research, and professional service activities focus on Doctor of Pharmacy education, pharmacy residency program training and accreditation, and entry-level pharmacist competency assessment.
Smith graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy in 2003. She completed an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, TX. She then completed a PGY2 residency in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and academics at Duke University Medical Center and Campbell University School of Pharmacy in Durham, NC. Smith is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and has previously served as residency program director for both PGY1 pharmacy and PGY2 internal medicine residencies.
Smith has been active in ASHP throughout her career, having delivered presentations at the ASHP National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference and contributing to the work of the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists (SCSS) and the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP). Smith served as director-at-large in the inaugural Section of Pharmacy Educators executive committee and currently serves on the section’s Committee on Nominations. Her work with ASHP Sections has been published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy (AJHP). Smith is currently a member of the ASHP Commission on Credentialing as well as a practitioner surveyor for PGY1 pharmacy and PGY2 internal medicine residency accreditation. She has also been active in other pharmacy organizations such as the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
