Zach Krauss

Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Manager

UVA Health

Virginia

Zach Krauss currently serves as Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Manager at UVA Health in Charlottesville, VA. Before accepting this role, Zach completed his PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and graduated in 2023 from Cedarville University School of Pharmacy. Zach has a passion for innovating and enhancing patient care through pharmacy practice, especially in the ambulatory space through areas like ambulatory care pharmacy, specialty pharmacy, population health management, transitions of care services, and home and ambulatory infusion services. Zach has remained dedicated to staying involved in pharmacy professional organizations and serves in various committee for APhA, ACCP, NPhA, as well as his state pharmacy affiliate in addition to his service within ASHP. In his free time, Zach likes exploring new coffee shops, traveling, listening to and playing music, and spending quality time with his friends and coworkers.

Reasons for selecting this career path:
I decided to pursue pharmacy administration, specifically within the ambulatory setting because I have seen just how much impact pharmacists can have in the primary and specialty disease state clinic setting, and I also see how much opportunity there is to continue expanding on the models that already exist. Our payers and health systems will only continue to grow as our population does, and we will continue to see expansion of value-based healthcare services in the future, and I want to work as a leader to make sure pharmacy has a seat at the table as those areas continue to grow. I love the balance of clinical practice and people leadership, and being able to do that in a space that I’m passionate about clinically was the perfect blend of my interests as I was looking to the path I wanted to take after completing my training.

Professional Interests:

  • Ambulatory Care and Population Health
  • Precepting, Teaching, and Residency Training
  • Health Equity and Care of Underserved Populations
  • Transitions of Care Pharmacy Services

Interest in serving on the NPF Executive Committee:
Becoming a pharmacist and building your career as a new practitioner can be daunting, and I have grown to see the value in the resources that organizations like ASHP can provide, especially through communities that connect new practitioners. I want to be able to find ways to encourage new practitioners and young professionals to find ways to make the most of their training, to innovate in their practice to improve patient care, and to continue developing personally and professionally in the ever-changing healthcare landscape.

Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner:
I have gained so much as a New Practitioner already through the many networking opportunities that ASHP offers, both in person at their national conference programming, but also through the various social and professional activities that NPF offers for New Practitioners. I have enjoyed some of the seminars on leadership topics throughout the last year on topics such as professional involvement as a pharmacist, as these have helped me to better understand the approach I would like to have as I continue to move into my career as an independent practitioner.
