Leading in a Unionized Environment
Managing a pharmacy in a unionized environment requires a thoughtful balance of leadership, legal understanding, and team engagement. Pharmacy leaders must navigate contract obligations while supporting staff, maintaining workflow, and delivering safe, effective care. This resource offers practical strategies to align people, policy, and practice for a collaborative and compliant work environment. With the right approach, you can lead confidently and foster a strong, high-performing pharmacy team.
Workplace Tips for Leading Unionized Team Members
- Start orientation and on-boarding for new team members being mindful of union rules. Make sure they understand both the contract expectations and performance expectations. This may mean including union representatives during the onboarding process.
- Union-represented staff often have different eyes on workflow risk and may give you valuable frontline insight.
- Make workload metrics transparent, specifically if there are certain standards that must be maintained via contract language. Share volumes, staffing ratios, error/near-miss data, patient-impact metrics so the team sees shared challenges.
- Solicit input on staffing/scheduling changes. In many union contracts there are mechanisms for informing team members of changes ahead of time.
- Create employee engagement surveys to track morale, burnout and turnover. Unionization efforts in pharmacies are often driven by heavy workloads, understaffing and burnout. Being proactive about workforce well-being helps show you care if you can proactively create a better working environment.
- Share successes of the team often! When safety improvements, staffing enhancements or quality metrics improve, make sure to acknowledge the role of all team members and relate it back to suggestions that were asked by the team.
