In this podcast, Jorge Garcia, Leyner Martinez, and Daniel Cobaugh will discuss their unique experiences as a couple who are leaders in health-system pharmacy practice. They will hit upon their early career experiences, navigating residency as a couple, balancing the demands of family and career, and their advice for LGBTQ people in pharmacy.

Jorge J. García obtained his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in 2010. He then transitioned to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to pursue an American Society of Health-System Pharmacy (ASHP)-accredited PGY-1 & PGY-2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency and a Master of Science (MS) in Pharmacy Administration. He also completed an Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) from Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Dr. García has previously served in the roles of inpatient pharmacy operations coordinator as well as director of pharmacy for system wide oncology pharmacy services.
Dr. García currently serves as an Assistant Vice President (AVP) at Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF) with responsibility for system-wide acute and ambulatory oncology pharmacy services as well as non-oncology infusion pharmacy services. Dr. García has pioneered pharmacy charge integrity and revenue management in the health-system setting and is a thought leader and national speaker in this area, as well as in the areas of alternative payment models, biosimilars, and value-based oncology care. Dr. García leads advocacy efforts at the national level to promote evaluation of safe and effective use of biosimilars, along with stakeholders’ engagement to support a more sustainable biosimilar pharmacoeconomic model. Dr. García has served as a board member at Florida Society of Clinical Oncology (FLASCO) since 2015 and is also a previous recipient of the FLASCO Above and Beyond Award, which honored his exceptional dedication and innovative contributions to the society. Dr. García also currently holds multiple committee appoints at the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), including the Oncology Pharmacy Education Network (OPEN) and the National Biosimilar Taskforce. Leyner Martinez, PharmD, MS, MHA, is the Director of Pharmacy Services at Baptist Hospital of Miami. Dr. Martinez earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Family, Child, and Consumer Sciences from Florida State University. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from LECOM School of Pharmacy. After pharmacy school he completed a PGY-1 residency with drug information emphasis at the Poison Control Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then went on to complete a combined PGY-1/PGY-2 residency in Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He earned a Master of Science degree in pharmacy administration and a Teaching Certificate from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Martinez also completed a Master of Healthcare Administration from Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Martinez has certifications in Medication Therapy Management and Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery. He is also a preceptor to residents and students for health-system pharmacy administration and advance hospital/institutional practice rotations. Dr. Martinez is a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP).
Daniel J. Cobaugh, Pharm.D. FAACT, DABAT is the vice president of publishing at ASHP and the editor-in-chief of AJHP. His responsibilities include executive leadership for the AHFS Drug Information product suite, the ASHP Special Publishing program, and AJHP. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987 and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree, magna cum laude, from Duquesne University in 1989. He completed an ASHP-accredited residency in hospital pharmacy at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh and a clinical toxicology fellowship at the Pittsburgh Poison Center/Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He practiced as pharmacist-clinical toxicologist and held faculty appointments at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Rochester Medical Center. He was recognized in June 2012 by the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy as a distinguished alumnus and was a 2013 recipient of the University of Pittsburgh 225th Anniversary Medallion.
