This activity will begin with an introduction to the terminology needed to provide inclusive care for sexual and gender minorities (SGMs). Faculty will also explore health disparities experienced by SGMs and their underlying social determinants of health. Learn how to assess your own health system’s practices related to inclusivity and apply strategies to create an affirming environment for SGM patients, colleagues, and trainees.
Learning Objectives
- Differentiate common terminology used to describe gender identities and sexual orientations, including the acronym components of LGBTQ+.
- Identify social determinants of health that contribute to healthcare disparities experienced by sexual and gender minorities.
- Assess practice sites for inclusivity and an affirming environment for LGBTQ+ colleagues, pharmacy trainees, and patients.
- Develop a multi-faceted approach to create and improve cultural competency related to LGBTQ+ persons.

Dr. Alex Mills (he/him/his) is an assistant professor at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his Pharm.D from Purdue University in 2017, completed a PGY1 community-based residency with Walgreens and Purdue in Indianapolis, Indiana, followed by a PGY2 ambulatory care residency with The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. Dr. Mills serves as director of clinical services for the University of Mississippi Medical Center's "TEAM" clinic, which provides primary and gender-affirming care to persons of the LGBTQ+ community, and is co-director of the Center for Sexual and Gender Minority Health for the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Dr. Kyle Melin is an Associate Professor at University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy. He is an ambulatory care clinician and researcher in the fields of personalized medicine and substance use disorders. Dr. Melin’s formative research to understand practicing pharmacists' readiness to provide care for transgender patients informs his continuing educations for practicing pharmacists in this area. Dr. Wolcott is the Director of Educational Resources and Scholarship at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. In this role, he supports faculty to optimize teaching and learning, enhance their teaching experience, and inspire educational scholarship. He completed his Ph.D. in education at the UNC School of Education specializing in the learning sciences and psychological studies. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy followed by a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University Hospital, where he worked as a clinical infectious diseases pharmacist. Michael is also a clinical assistant professor in the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy where he supports educational research initiatives within the School. Michael’s research focuses on creative problem-solving, curriculum change management, preceptor development, and assessment.
