Celebrating Pharmacy Technicians and the Pharmacy Profession
Dear Colleagues,
Today, on Pharmacy Technician Day, I want to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of pharmacy technicians across the country. These professionals are vital to the success of pharmacy teams and the delivery of safe, effective patient care. Their dedication, skill, and adaptability continue to elevate our profession.
This year marks an exciting milestone: The Pharmacy Technician Society® (TPTS) has surpassed 16,000 members. This growth reinforces the importance of TPTS and our vision of a professional home for technicians that is built for them, led by them, and focused on their future.
Last week, I participated in a TPTS Board of Directors meeting at ASHP’s Bethesda headquarters. The members of this board exemplify the promise and opportunity of a highly professionalized technician workforce. They are leaders, change agents, and dedicated proponents of TPTS’s mission to empower pharmacy technicians to provide the highest standards of patient care through top-quality education, professional development, and advocacy.
In just two years, the TPTS Board and staff have worked hard to support pharmacy technicians in every practice setting and stage of their careers. TPTS ensures that technicians are prepared, supported, and recognized for their contributions.
Earlier this year, TPTS released its first strategic plan, which outlines bold goals for achieving the organization's vision and mission. The plan centers on three pillars: our members, our profession, and our voice. These priorities reflect our commitment to technician well-being, standardized training, and meaningful representation in policy and practice.
TPTS continues to expand access to a wealth of resources, continuing education, career development, and monthly networking opportunities for pharmacy technicians.
This week, TPTS launched its annual resume/CV review program, helping pharmacy technicians at every stage of their careers — from those just starting out to those seeking more advanced roles.
Technician leaders also have an opportunity to serve on the board. Nominations are open through Feb. 12, 2026, and applications for committee positions will be accepted beginning in December.
A range of upcoming webinars — available live and recorded — will cover topics such as technician training, conflict resolution, and medication updates. The next podcast, releasing on Nov. 5, will feature pharmacy technicians discussing their experiences in advocacy and serving on state boards of pharmacy.
Don’t miss this year’s ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition, Dec. 7-10 in Las Vegas. We have a robust offering of technician-focused educational sessions and networking opportunities — including a TPTS Town Hall on Dec. 7, where attendees can connect, share experiences, and discuss the path ahead for 2026 and beyond.
In another exciting development, the ASHP Foundation announced today that 14 pharmacy technicians received scholarships to attend the Midyear meeting through the ASHP Foundation Professional Advancement Scholarship program.
Help the ASHP Foundation’s efforts to support pharmacy technicians’ professional growth by contributing to their new Pharmacy Technician Advancement Fund. You can donate in honor of a pharmacy technician you know.
As the pharmacy workforce evolves, technicians are stepping into expanded roles and new responsibilities that improve patient care and strengthen pharmacy operations. Through advocacy, professional development, and networking, we are working together to advance technician practice and elevate the profession.
To every pharmacy technician, thank you for your commitment to excellence and leadership in shaping the future of pharmacy. As we also celebrate National Pharmacy Week, Oct. 19-25, I’m proud of how far we’ve come — and excited for what’s ahead. Because of each and every one of you, we are making a difference for our patients, our communities, and the future of pharmacy practice.
Thank you for all you do for your patients and our profession.
Sincerely,
Paul
