Reason for the Shortage

    • Amneal did not provide a reason for the shortage of Dotti twice-weekly transdermal patches. Lyllana is currently available.
    • Bayer has Climara once-weekly transdermal patches available.
    • Noven has estradiol transdermal patches on shortage due to increased demand. Product is distributed by Grove Pharmaceuticals.
    • Sandoz did not provide a reason for the shortage of the once-weekly estradiol transdermal patches.
    • Viatris did not provide a reason for the shortage of the twice-weekly estradiol transdermal patches. .
    • Zydus did not provide a reason for the shortage of the twice-weekly estradiol transdermal patches.

Estimated Resupply Dates

    • Amneal has Dotti 0.0375 mg/24 hour and 0.1 mg/24 hour twice-weekly patches in 8 count packages on back order and the company cannot estimate a release date.
    • Noven (distributed by Grove) has all presentations on intermittent back order with weekly releases.
    • Zydus has all presentations on allocation.
    • Sandoz has 0.0375 mg/24 hour and 0.1 mg/24 hour once-weekly patches on back order and the company cannot estimate a release date. All other presentations are on allocation.
    • Viatris has estradiol 0.05 mg/24 hour twice-weekly patches in 8 count (NDC 00378-4642-26) on intermittent back order and the company is releasing supplies as they become available.

Safety

    • Clinicians may be curious if patches may be cut during this shortage, particularly if a patient's usual dose is unavailable. Transdermal patches are typically either a reservoir dosage form (and should never be cut) or a matrix dosage form. Cutting a matrix patch may result in uneven dose release resulting in variable therapy. Stability of cut patches may also be variable and result in variable therapy.
    • Some estradiol patches that are matrix dosage forms in the US currently include: Alora, Climara, Dotti, Lyllana, Menostar, and the authorized generic of Minivelle (Minivelle was discontinued in February) from Noven.
