Why I Do What I Do

I always wanted a career where I could help others. I was interested in healthcare and I found an opportunity in pharmacy at the University of Michigan. I started my training in the in-patient pharmacy in 2004. I learned a lot about pharmacy and saw the importance of our job. I have worked as a staff technician in adult, children, OR, central, and cardiovascular center pharmacy satellites for seven years. In 2011 I became Pharmacy Technician Recruiter/Trainer at Michigan Medicine and, since then, I have been recruiting and training all new staff technicians. In my 14 years in pharmacy, I have been blessed to work in many different roles and areas in our organization.

Latest Accomplishment

In 2016 I received the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award. That same year, I presented two posters at the Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas.

Most Memorable Experience as a Pharmacy Technician

I have so many great memories as a pharmacy technician. I recall working short-staffed during a snowstorm; many co-workers couldn't make it to work because of the bad road conditions. In the absence of my co-workers, I worked 12 hours in the clean room making IVs. It was a great honor to serve the patients and make sure they received the treatment needed.

Why I Became Certified

Certification wasn't required when I started my job. When I learned about certification, I registered immediately and started studying for the exam. In March 2005 I took the exam and passed it on the first attempt. I think certification is important because I believe I am better qualified to support pharmacists and patient care teams in all practice settings.

My Passion Outside of Work

My family is my passion. I have been married since 2004 and I have 3 kids. I have a son in high school, a daughter in middle school, and my youngest is in elementary school. I love to travel and I hope one day I can take a road trip with my family across the U.S.

Advice to Up-and-Coming Technicians

It is great to be a pharmacy technician. There are so many opportunities to grow in your career. Always remember that you are helping patients to get better. Make sure when you dispense a medication to double-check yourself. Get certified and keep up with what's going on in the pharmacy world by attending pharmacy conferences. Don't be shy to ask questions any time you are not sure about something.
