Reasons for selecting this career path:

While studying at Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy, I developed my passion for patient care in the ambulatory setting. I knew that I wanted to pursue a residency from the beginning of pharmacy school, but realized I wanted to specialize in Ambulatory Care during my unique IPPE rotation experience through the Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning (VPIL). This program allowed me to work in an interprofessional team for 3 years providing ambulatory services to patients living with sickle cell in the Nashville area. This passion was further strengthened through my APPE rotations and my PGY1 and PGY2 residency program experiences at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Northern Kentucky. As a pharmacy resident, I was also able to begin precepting students and lecturing at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy. This experience combined with my research goals and commitment to pharmacy profession involvement at a local and national level led me to realize that a career in academia was a great fit for me, as it encompasses all these areas. I am currently a full-time faculty member at the University of Cincinnati and have continued to practice in primary care and population health at St. Elizabeth Physicians in Northern Kentucky. At the University, I serve as a preceptor for APPE students, serve as course coordinator for a third-year course in pharmacy practice advancement, and I am active in our interprofessional programs.

Interest in the NPF Executive Committee:

I first served on an ASHP advisory group as a student pharmacist in my fourth year of pharmacy school. This experience inspired me to continue professional involvement as a new practitioner and I have served on the Career Development Advisory Group (CDAG) for three years as a member, workgroup lead, and Chair. I fundamentally believe that involvement in national organizations is essential to pharmacy practice. ASHP has provided numerous resources to me throughout my career and many of them have been generated through the work of advisory groups. With my appointment to the NPF Executive Committee, I seek to give back to ASHP and our pharmacy profession by acting as an advocate for new practitioners.

Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner:

Without hesitation, the biggest benefit of NPF involvement has been networking and working alongside colleagues from across the entire country. Not only have I been able to meet these colleagues who are at similar career stages, but we have also worked on advisory group charges and other projects together.  This involvement has led to discussion of new practice ideas, speaking opportunities, and new friendships within the pharmacy world.

Fun Fact: I ate a lionfish speared by one of my classmates while on a pharmacy school rotation in Belize.
