Kevin Zinchuk
Kevin Zinchuk graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2011 with a Doctorate in Pharmacy and joined the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Investigational Drug Service (BWH IDS) team the same year. Zinchuk is currently the pharmacy manager at BWH IDS. In 2023, Zinchuk obtained a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) credential through the Society of Clinical Research Associates.
Facility:
BWH, a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, is an 846-bed academic medical center based in Boston, Massachusetts. BWH serves patients from across the United States and from 120 countries around the world. U.S. News & World Report recognizes BWH among the best hospitals in many specialty areas, including cancer, heart and vascular, diabetes and endocrine disorders, ear, nose and throat, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatric care, gynecology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, rheumatology, and urology. BWH is part of Mass General Brigham, a single, integrated health care system made up of 16 member institutions that encompass a range of health care organizations including academic medical centers, top-tier specialty hospitals, community hospitals, rehabilitation network, as well as its own health insurance plan and physician network.
Current Responsibilities:
Over the course of his career, Zinchuk has collaborated closely with hundreds of researchers in both the public and private sectors to conceptualize, develop, and operationalize interventional clinical trials. Zinchuk worked as a subject matter expert for BWH in transitioning clinical trial medication documentation from paper orders to Epic Systems’ electronic health record. Through collaboration with clinical trial pharmacy leadership across all Mass General Brigham institutions, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and other academic medical centers around the globe, Zinchuk continuously strives to advance investigational drug practice. Currently, Zinchuk oversees a team of nine research pharmacists, one or two post graduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residents, 10 pharmacy technicians, and nine pharmacy interns. As long-time chair of the BWH Pharmacy Rapid Cycle Process Improvement Committee, an active member of the Mass General Brigham Institutional Review Board and Institutional Biosafety Committee, as well as a member of other departmental, institutional, and enterprise committees, Zinchuk has consistently worked to improve overall pharmacy operations, clinical trial practice, and patient care. Over the course of Zinchuk’s career, he has enjoyed precepting numerous pharmacy students and residents on investigational drug service rotations. In 2023, Zinchuk established a new PGY2 pharmacy residency program at BWH in Investigational Drugs and Research to help facilitate the continued expansion of research pharmacists’ role in clinical trial practice at BWH and beyond. Zinchuk has published and presented numerous educational sessions, posters and manuscripts on investigational drugs and compounding practice in peer reviewed journals and at local, national, and international conferences. In maintaining his CCRP credential, Zinchuk demonstrates his commitment to upholding internationally recognized standards for protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects and the overall conduct of clinical trials. Zinchuk’s professional interests include pharmacy informatics, regulatory compliance in the dispensing of investigational drugs, general pharmaceutical compounding and formulation development. Outside of his responsibilities at BWH, Zinchuk has volunteered and worked as a clinical operations and regulatory affairs consultant at Harvard School of Public Health, Joslin Diabetes Center, Abbott Laboratories, Agenus Inc., and Prometrika LLC to help develop clinical trial protocols, investigational drug dosage forms, and study site operations.
Recent Significant Projects:
As part of my membership in the Section of Clinical Specialist and Scientist Emerging Sciences Section Advisory Group, I have helped to coordinate and contribute to the development of an eight-part recorded series on gene and cellular therapies and their impact on pharmacy practice and the overall healthcare landscape. With the sustained growth of these treatment modalities, additional education for pharmacists on the topic is a major priority for subject matter experts and pharmacy leaders.
Involvement with ASHP:
I am an AJHP published author and speaker. I'm an active member of the SCSS Emerging Sciences SAG, and I am the residency program director for an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency program. Most recently I joined an advisory committee tasked with developing and planning the Summit on Advanced Therapeutics being held at the Pharmacy Futures 2025 meeting.
Reason for ASHP Involvement:
I initially became interested in increasing my involvement in ASHP as a way to expand my professional network. I quickly realized that there were lots of opportunities to develop and improve educational offerings in areas that I was interested in or already knowledgeable about. My engagement with ASHP has been incredibly rewarding. I've met lots of amazing pharmacy professionals from around the country. It has stimulated my own learning and provided me with a new platform to give back and help advance pharmacy practice.
Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
Like lots of things in this world, the value of ASHP membership corresponds to the time and energy a person is willing to invest into the organization. My ASHP membership has been incredibly valuable, and I look forward to continuing my engagement with them for years to come.
Value of ASHP for the Profession:
ASHP is an incredibly powerful educational platform, advocacy hub and professional network. Without ASHP's constant guidance over the past 80+ years, I am confident in saying that the profession of pharmacy would be a shadow of what it is today.
