Trenton Soukup
Trenton Soukup received his PharmD degree from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 2018. In his free time, Soukup enjoys traveling, spending quality time with his partner and golden retriever, Clifford, and officiating football at the high school and collegiate levels.
Current responsibilities:
Soukup began his pharmacy career serving as an outpatient staff pharmacist, counseling patients, advocating for medication access, and serving as a medication expert on the healthcare team. Beginning in May 2023, Soukup transitioned into a new leadership role as intern supervisor, overseeing 23 pharmacy interns who work directly within the outpatient pharmacy at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Describe the facility where you work:
The ambulatory pharmacy department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital prepares and dispenses prescriptions for patients, hospital employees and medical staff. Our pharmacists are the pediatric medication experts serving patients and providing support for community pharmacies. The department of pharmacy is committed to all customers, ensuring the right child receives the right medication in the right dose by the right route at the right time.
What type of significant projects have you been involved in recently?
One of my biggest accomplishments was co-leading successful PCAB Accreditation at our outpatient pharmacy location at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Our accreditation signifies our organizations commitment to provide high quality standards and business best practices designed to enhance patient safety and ensure that medication access remains intact for our diverse pediatric patient population.
What kind of advice would you provide for someone new to your specialty area?
I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by other leaders in our Pharmacy Department that provide valuable feedback on my performance and ensure my continued development as a professional. I have learned through these discussions the importance of self-reflection and value of gratification. I encourage others to maintain a commitment to remain a lifelong learner as the realm of pharmacy continues to transition over time.
What is your current involvement with ASHP?
This is my second year as an ASHP member and my first year serving as a member of the SICP Educational Steering Committee.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
To surround myself with passionate leaders who are willing and able to provide mentorship and guidance on opportunities that allow for innovation of the pharmacist role.
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
The practice resources and network opportunities are very helpful. I appreciate and value the perspective others were willing to share related to non-sterile compounding operations during our organization's accreditation preparation.
What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP adds value to the profession through networking, advocacy, leadership opportunities, and collaboration to continue and advance the profession as a whole.
