Samantha Bastow holds a PharmD from Palm Beach Atlantic University and a MBA with a specialization in data analytics from the University of Illinois. She completed a post graduate year 1 (PGY1) residency at Sarasota Memorial Hospital followed by an Emergency Medicine Pharmacy residency at Boston Medical Center.

Facility:
Becton, Dickerson and Company (BD) is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world and is advancing the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care.

Current Responsibilities:
I serve as Associate Director in Medical Affairs at Becton, Dickinson and Company. In this role, I lead the clinical aspects of innovation and new product development, lifecycle clinical evidence generation, and safety and compliance. I also precept the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential Medical Affairs and Post Graduate Year Two Residency Health Economics and Outcomes Research learning experiences.

Recent Significant Projects:
I lead research initiatives and collaborate closely with my R&D colleagues on advancements in medical technology and device capabilities aimed at addressing clinical care gaps and clinician needs. A recent example of my work includes research on hospital-onset bacteremia, which emphasizes the significant clinical and economic burden of this disease state compared to other types of hospital-acquired infections. Another notable contribution is the development of artificial intelligence-supported clinician workflows within the acute care setting, aimed at reducing administrative burdens on clinicians and enhancing patient safety.

Advice for Someone New to a Specialty Area:
Pharmacists are highly valuable in supporting the advancement of medical technology and pharmaceuticals within industry organizations globally. The key to success is truly knowing the patients and clinicians that we serve in order to innovate in a way that will transform patient care - seek out diverse experiences and challenge the status quo.

Involvement with ASHP:
I currently serve as the Vice Chair of the ASHP Section Advisory Group for Data Analytics.

Reason for ASHP involvement:
To expand my network, engage in lifelong learning, and advocate for the profession of pharmacy and the patients that we serve.

Value of ASHP for Peers or Colleagues:
ASHP provides all pharmacists incredible value through networking, education, leadership development and advocacy. Whether a pharmacist is a new practitioner or much further into their career journey, there are valuable experiences for all.

Value of ASHP for the Profession:
ASHP is an organization that brings together pharmacists from diverse backgrounds, training and experiences. There is profound synergy that comes from collaboration of such pharmacists who are working towards a common goal - to advance the profession of pharmacy.
