Joshua W. Fleming

Joshua's Story

Dr. Fleming received his Pharm.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 2010. Upon completion of his Pharm.D., he went on to pursue residency training. He completed a Pharmacy Practice PGY1 Residency at Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2011. From there he went on to complete a PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2012, and he became a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist later that same year.

Dr. Fleming currently serves as a member of the Ambulatory Care Medication Management Section Advisory Group. In the past, his involvement has been primarily in the New Practitioners forum serving as a member of several advisory groups followed by two years of service on the Executive Committee as Vice-Chair and Chair.

Facility

The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy is an institution of higher learning with campuses in both Oxford and Jackson, Mississippi. In my role on the Jackson Campus of the School of Pharmacy, I teach primarily in the third and fourth years of our professional curriculum, maintain an active practice site at a Federally Qualified Health Center, and serve as the Director of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency.

Significant Projects

To date, the most significant project that Dr. Fleming has been involved with is the development and creation of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program. This program started in 2015 with one resident. In 2016 he was able to expand this program to two residents through the assistance of the Residency Expansion Grant from the ASHP Foundation.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

"While Ambulatory Care and Pharmacy Practice are both on the precipice of great change in the near future, it is important to remain steadfast in our current roles as pharmacists in the clinic setting. Many of us are anxious for changes to occur, but it takes time, dedication, and proven strong clinical skills in order to be leaders in pharmacy care. These tenets have helped me to be able to develop a clinical practice in a setting that has not had a pharmacy presence in the past."

Becoming Involved in ASHP

"I became involved with ASHP because much of my passion in pharmacy largely revolves around preparing advanced clinical practitioners primarily through residency training. Given ASHP's stance on residency training it seemed to be a great fit for my interests."

Value of ASHP

"ASHP has been my organizational home since graduating from pharmacy school. The resources that have been offered to me from ASHP have been timely and beneficial to me through many career transitions. While it is a large organization, it is an organization that is connected to its membership, and that is something that is rarely seen in many other pharmacy organizations."

"ASHP has been actively involved in propelling our profession forward since its inception through Practice Advancement Initiatives, standardization of residency training, and now a strong voice in the push for provider status."
