Cheyenne’s Story

Dr. Newsome attended pharmacy school at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and graduated with her Pharm.D. in 2014. After spending over 20 years in the Midwest, Dr. Newsome was ready for a change and moved to Albuquerque for her PGY1 residency at the University of New Mexico Hospitals. She grew to love the Land of Enchantment and elected to stay for a second year residency in ambulatory care at the University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Newsome is a member of the New Practitioners Forum and the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners (SACP). In September of 2015, she began serving on the SACP Clinical Practice Advancement Section Advisory Group. Dr. Newsome also serves as a mentor to SSHP students at UNM. She enjoys being involved in ASHP for all the networking, leadership development, and practice advancement opportunities provided. Dr. Newsome has found ASHP Connect to be a great way to seek and provide answers to practice or clinical questions.

Facility

Dr. Newsome is currently in her PGY2, investigating the many areas of ambulatory care pharmacy. Most of her clinics are in a teaching environment with various interdisciplinary learners. Due to the advanced practice pharmacist license (pharmacist clinician) in New Mexico, Dr. Newsome is able to work with pharmacists who have prescriptive authority in many specialties including HIV, chronic pain management, CHF, geriatrics, and family medicine.

Significant Projects

Last year, Dr. Newsome completed an analysis of the UNM Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) Program to determine if the quality of residents’ lectures was improved by completion of a TLC Program. This analysis found residents who underwent the TLC program lecture wrote more clear and specific learning objectives. Currently Dr. Newsome is working on a project examining the correlation between a patient’s health literacy and diabetic control in a pharmacist-run clinic. This project is still in the data collection phase.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“As a newbie myself I am already experiencing the many benefits of networking, especially in ambulatory care, a field that is growing, changing, and progressing at a fast pace. As I begin to create my own practice site, I will lean on my fellow ambulatory care pharmacists for their insight on what strategies have been effective and what to avoid. The value of networking cannot be overestimated.”

Involvement in ASHP

“Like many, my ASHP involvement started as a student through SSHP. I had the privilege of working with the Section’s Past Chair, Dr. Melanie Dodd, every week during my first year of residency. After observing the connections she had made and discovering the many resources on ASHPs website for ambulatory care practitioners, I knew I wanted to be involved in the organization.”

ASHP’s Value to Members

“ASHP has different avenues that provide value to me as an ambulatory care pharmacist. I have been able to take advantage of the networking opportunities through ASHP Connect, discussions with colleagues at national meetings, and serving on a section advisory group. ASHP also has an abundance of resources online for practice development. I also subscribe to ASHP’s Daily Briefings, which provide me a quick, simple way to stay up with current topics.”

“ASHP serves as a platform for pharmacists to network and build off of each other. ASHP’s continuous efforts to obtain provider status are important to me for the growth of our profession. The advocacy efforts of ASHP would not be possible without it serving as a unified, organized body leading the charge.”
