Cortney Mospan

Cortney’s Story

Dr. Mospan received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University Raabe College of Pharmacy. Following graduation, she completed a PGY-1 Community Care Pharmacy Practice Residency at The Ohio State University with practice sites at Uptown Pharmacy and the Ohio Pharmacists Association. In 2015, Dr. Mospan became a Board Certified Ambulatory Care Pharmacist and became a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist in 2016. After residency, Dr. Mospan served as a community-pharmacy based faculty member at East Tennessee State University for two years.

Dr. Mospan currently serves as a member of the Section Advisory Group on Medication Therapy Management in the Community.

Facility

Currently, Dr. Mospan practices as a community pharmacist with Harris Teeter, a subsidiary of The Kroger Co., with over 230 operating stores. In a previous faculty position, she established a charitable pharmacy within a federally-qualified health center and also provided clinical services at an independent pharmacy. In the future, Dr. Mospan hopes to partner with a local independent pharmacy to again establish clinical services and conduct community pharmacy practice-based research.

Significant Projects

Dr. Mospan recently performed a retrospective review of a blended learning style and interprofessional communications course. They assessed if there was a variance in frequency of suicidal ideation assessment amongst medical, nursing, and pharmacy learners. Alarmingly, only 46% of student pharmacists performed the assessment, being significantly less likely than their peers. This has created a passion for Dr. Mospan as a community-based practitioner, spurring an interest in further research in this area and working to increase the frequency of suicidal ideation assessment and monitoring of mental health by community pharmacists.

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

“Get to know the people who know what they are talking about. You can’t grow if you don’t challenge yourself and you will learn the most when stepping out of your comfort zone and trying to work with the experts. If there is a meeting relating to your practice area/disease specialty, go! This will allow you to develop critical professional networks for mentors, collaborators, and potential opportunities down the line. It will also stimulate you, providing new ideas, enhancing your knowledge base, and may stimulate new projects and research.”

Involvement in ASHP

“I wanted to better understand management skills, pearls, and training relating to health-system practice. I teach management and wanted to provide perspective for all practice settings. With the bulk of my practice experience being in community or ambulatory care, I didn’t have much to offer students from a hospital or institutional perspective. I also wanted to connect with ambulatory care practitioners, particularly the Section Advisory Group on MTM in the Community, to advance the clinical standards and services of community-based practitioners.”
