Erin Copi

Erin's Story

Dr. Copi received her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Toledo, Ohio in 2016. She then went on to complete an ASHP Accredited PGY1 residency in Community Pharmacy at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, Michigan from 2016-2017. Following completion of her PGY1 training, she went on to complete an ASHP Accredited PGY2 residency in Ambulatory Care at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio from 2017-2018. After completing her training, Dr. Copi joined Parkview Health as an Ambulatory Pharmacist in a Family Practice office in Bryan, Ohio.

Facility

Parkview Health is a not-for-profit, community-based health system serving northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. Parkview Physicians Group consists of outpatient primary care services and more than 50 clinical specialties in this region. The Family Practice clinic in Bryan, Ohio has several physicians and nurse practitioners to serve the needs of the rural Ohio area. In August 2018, the primary care team was expanded to include a clinical pharmacist.

Recent Significant Projects

Dr. Copi has worked to build pharmacy services in a clinic that previously did not have pharmacy presence. She established pharmacist warfarin monitoring through collaborative practice agreement, and has been working to provide patient education through counseling on newly prescribed inhalers and diabetic medication devices. She is working to provide medication review to targeted patients of the clinic, and to explore other potential areas for pharmacist involvement.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Copi is serving on the Section Advisory Group on Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy. She also volunteers as a CV reviewer. She is actively involved with the local affiliated chapter, Toledo Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists, where she serves as Treasurer.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

I became involved in ASHP as a student in order to learn more about clinical pharmacy and residency. I have continued to stay involved in ASHP and my local affiliated chapter to network with other pharmacists, develop in my own career, and give back to the profession.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP offers many opportunities for pharmacists, including networking, continuing education, and mentorship. They have many available resources to help you to develop in your career, grow pharmacy services, and mentor the next generation of pharmacists. 

Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area

Work with other disciplines to provide collaborative, team based care. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and show what a pharmacist can do, as there are still many providers who do not know all the services that pharmacists can provide.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP has a strong commitment to advancing the profession of pharmacy. They are advocates for the advancement of pharmacy. ASHP provides education and resources to assist with professional development of its members.
