Bryan Shaw
Bryan’s Story
Dr. Bryan Shaw, Pharm.D., is a non-traditional PGY-1 pharmacy resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Shaw is currently a member on the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP) Section Advisory Group (SAG) on Advancing Pharmacy Practice with Technicians. Dr. Shaw feels that the SAG is doing tremendous work to advance the pharmacy practice model by extending the role of pharmacy technicians. Dr. Shaw graduated from Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions in 2012 and he is originally from Detroit, Michigan. This July, Bryan will start a PGY-2 in Informatics at Vizient, Inc and St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
Facility
Northwestern Memorial Hospital is one of the country’s premier academic medical center hospitals and a major referral center for the Midwest and beyond. Northwestern Memorial provides a total of 894 licensed beds in the Feinberg Pavilion, Prentice Women’s Hospital and the Stone Institute of Psychiatry. It is the primary teaching hospital for Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and virtually every medical specialty is represented by the medical staff of 1,603 affiliated physicians who also carry appointments with the Feinberg School.
Significant Projects
Prior to starting his non-traditional residency, Bryan was a Clinical Pharmacy Informaticist at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. In that capacity he worked with colleagues on many initiatives, including order set optimization and electronic health record safety improvements. While at Northwestern Memorial Hospital he worked with colleagues on a pilot project for decentralizing pharmacy technicians on internal medicine and critical care nursing units. Currently, his is completing retrospective research to identify the effects of allergy service consults on patients with a beta-lactam allergy.
Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area
Your biggest strength, arguably, is the breadth of your experiences. The more you understand how your colleagues in all areas work, the better you can make informatics relevant to them. Seeking opportunities to advance your knowledge in medication safety and leadership establishes a great backbone to build off of. Maintaining clear and attainable goals to stay focused on incremental improvement and the goals of the organization.

ASHP provides an invaluable forum for like-minded professionals to collaborate and continually push the envelope of the pharmacy profession to improve patient care. The development and support of PAI and provider status continues to raise the bar on our profession.
