Emmanuel’s Story

Dr. Knight received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Touro College of Pharmacy in New York in 2015 and went on to complete a post doctoral fellowship in Pharmacy Academia at Touro. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Knight completed a PGY-1 residency at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in New York, where he then continued as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist and started their Transitions of Care program from the ground up. Dr. Knight is board certified in Pharmacotherapy and Geriatrics pharmacy practice and currently works at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Overview of Facility/Health System

Cedars Sinai Medical Center is an 886 bed, acute quaternary care, non-profit academic medical center based in Los Angeles, California. Cedars-Sinai has a national reputation as a center of the highest level of research and patient care with a diverse set of specialty areas including cardiac surgery, transplantation, endocrinology, cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, fertility, neurology, and internal medicine; total of more than 100 intensive care unit beds and active emergency and ambulatory care departments.

Significant Projects

Dr. Knight is currently participating in a longitudinal, multicenter, randomized trial testing a peri- and post-discharge pharmacist-led medication management intervention on post-discharge utilization, including both readmissions and emergency department visits within 30 days of discharge.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Knight is currently an active member of the 2019-2020 ASHP Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners Advisory Group for Pharmacy Practice Experiences Precepting (PPEP) where he assists in developing and evaluating tools and resources for experiential education.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

If I could give any advice to someone new to the Transitions of Care specialty, I would say learn all you can about other specialty areas since ensuring effective care transitions is a vital aspect of all specialties. Having a good understanding of the medications involved in various specialty areas (i.e. critical care, geriatrics, infectious diseases, etc.) will allow you to catch medication-related problems that may be missed as patients transition through different services and settings. Also, be creative and don't be afraid to try new strategies in your practice, even if your current method seems to be working fine.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

I became involved with ASHP because I believe it's a great way to stay current with best practices and learn from the innovative ideas of colleagues at institutions around the country. As a fairly new practitioner, it was initially intimidating thinking of becoming involved with AHSP while still maintaining my job responsibilities. However, after some encouragement from my former boss and mentor Daryl Schiller, Director of Pharmacy at Montefiore Nyack Hospital, the rest is history.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

No matter what specialty you practice, ASHP is a "one-stop shop" for so many useful pharmacy-related resources. From continuing education opportunities for board certifications to networking with others, I find ASHP to be a valuable resource that I can count on consistently.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

I consider ASHP to be extremely valuable to the pharmacy profession because it provides useful guidance that you can use throughout your entire career. As a student, it provided everything I needed to know about applying to residencies programs. As a resident it provided me with opportunities to connect with potential employers. As a new practitioner it connected me with other new practitioners and resources to effectively transition into practice. As an established practitioner it provided useful strategies to overcome medication shortages and challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a member of the advisory group for precepting (PPEP), it provides me with an opportunity help ensure the next generation of pharmacy professionals receive valuable learning experiences. Lifelong learning is a great way to describe ASHP's value to the profession.
