Jamie’s Story

Jamie N. Brown, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCACP, received his doctor of pharmacy degree from Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2006 and then went on to complete an ASHP-accredited specialty residency in drug information with Campbell. After completing his residency, Dr. Brown accepted a clinical position with the Durham VA Health Care System where he currently serves as the Drug Information and Investigational Drug Service program manager and PGY2 Medication-Use Safety & Policy Residency Program Director. Dr. Brown is also appointed as a clinical professor of pharmacy practice with Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

Overview of Facility/Health System

The Durham VA Health Care System is a 271-bed tertiary care referral, teaching and research facility affiliated with Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and the Duke University School of Medicine. The health care system provides general and specialty medical, surgical, psychiatric inpatient and ambulatory services, and serves as a major referral center for North Carolina, southern Virginia, northern South Carolina, and eastern Tennessee.

Significant Projects

I am very involved in pharmacoeconomic research demonstrating the value of clinical pharmacists in medication-use policy, drug information, and the investigational drug service. This research also extends to the advancement residency training, including developing pharmacoeconomic models establishing the benefit of pharmacy residents in different clinical practice areas or innovative learning experiences.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

I serve as a member of the ASHP Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners Advisory Group on Pharmacy Practice Experiences Precepting and as an ASHP accreditation practitioner surveyor for both PGY1 and PGY2 residency programs.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

I initially became involved with ASHP as a student and was impressed with the clinical, networking, and leadership opportunities that ASHP provided. Once I began my clinical practice, I felt strongly that I should continue to work to advance our profession and ASHP felt like one of the best organizations to support these ambitions. 

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

As a practitioner, preceptor, and residency director, I find the resources that ASHP provides invaluable. I cannot count the number of times I have utilized ASHP to support my practice.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

I would encourage new practitioners to invest the time and effort into establishing themselves as an expert in their field. This includes challenging yourself to develop in areas that you lack confidence or that make you uncomfortable. The reward will be future opportunities that are exciting, professionally fulfilling, and are only possible if you put the effort in upfront.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

The professional interests and practice settings within pharmacy are incredibly diverse. Yet, I see ASHP as a uniting organization that represents and advocates for the best interests and advancement of our entire profession.
