Janene’s Story

Dr. Janene L. Marshall, Pharm.D., BCPS, is Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Chicago State University College of Pharmacy (CSU-COP). She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago, in Chicago, Illinois, and Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Marshall also completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency with Atlanta Medical Center and is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist. Her practice specialty is internal medicine. She has had clinical practice sites in community as well as teaching hospitals. Dr. Marshall is able to provide recommendations to the nurses and physicians in regards to the patient’s medication regimen, as well as provide patient education. She provides didactic education for the pharmacy students in the therapeutic and Disease and Medication Therapy Management courses.

Dr. Marshall’s research interests include examining evidence based medicine practices in internal medicine, examining the role of the pharmacist clinical intervention in improving patient safety and therapeutic outcomes, and examining health disparities among African-American and Latino patients. She has been an ASHP member since she was a pharmacy student. She was previously a member of the New Practitioner’s Forum Professional Practice Advisory Group. She is currently a member of the SICP Advancing Pharmacy Practice with Technicians Section Advisory Group.

Facility

The mission of Chicago State University College of Pharmacy (CSU-COP) is the development of student and faculty scholars who will impact the health care needs of people in the region, state, and the nation. Significant Projects

At her clinical practice sites, Dr. Marshall has been involved with Project R.E.D., B.O.O.S.T, diabetes, and COPD. She assists with the optimization of the patients’ medications and patient education in order to improve transitions of care and reduce inpatient admissions. She also participated in the monthly, “Meet the Pharmacist,” sessions in the outpatient diabetes classes.

At the University, Dr. Marshall has participated in scholarship of teaching research which has led to poster and podium presentations.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

“Stay abreast of the current evidence and clinical guidelines for the various disease states. One way to achieve that is to be a preceptor. Participating in a fourth year pharmacy student or resident’s education by precepting keeps you on your proverbial toes. Also, subscribe to receive the table of contents of the various journal to stay abreast of what has been recently published. Lastly, become involved with your state and national organizations.”
