Facility
Dr. Lee’s practice site, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in Nashville, Tennessee, is an academic medical center that serves as a referral center for Tennessee and the Southeast. VUMC has 1,065 licensed beds and is a national leader in patient care, research and education. Dr. Lee currently serves as an Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacist for the hospitalist service. The hospitalist service is a six team service that has a census of 60-90 patients daily.
Significant Projects
Dr. Lee’s main project currently is the development of a new shared service between a part-time clinical pharmacist employed by the institution and a college of pharmacy faculty member to cover a hospitalist-led Internal Medicine service. This is a unique model and we hope to measure success through patient outcomes and physician satisfaction.
Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area
“For those planning a career in either internal medicine or academia, I think it is very important to develop a structured method for staying current on clinical issues. This is challenging with a busy service and/or class load and something I still work on every day. It is vital to ensure you provide the best care for your patients and best education for your learners. ASHP provides multiple opportunities to help make this part of your daily routine.”
Involvement in ASHP
“My initial involvement came as I was searching for residency programs as a student. After attending the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and seeing all of the opportunity and good work ASHP does for the profession I decided that I wanted to play a bigger role in those. I applied to be a member of a SAG and it has been a very rewarding experience.”
ASHP’s Value to Members
“I think it goes back the theory about strength in numbers. Every year ASHP proves it has the most active membership of any pharmacy organization by hosting the largest gathering of pharmacists at the ASHP Midyear Clinical meeting. Becoming active in ASHP will allow someone in the profession to share his ideas with a large group of practitioners. Also, with the size of ASHP we are more able to affect change for the benefit of the profession.”
