Fei Wang

His Story

Dr. Wang received his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) School of Pharmacy in 2014. He then went on to complete a Pharmacy Practice Residency at Cleveland Clinic Florida followed by a Pharmacy Informatics Residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. After the completion of his residency training, Dr. Wang worked as a System Manager for the Department of Pharmacy at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center until 2018. In 2018, he transitioned to his current position as a Pharmacy Informatics Coordinator at the AdventHealth Central Florida Division. Dr. Wang obtained the Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) credential in 2016 and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) credential in 2018. His goal is to use Health Information Technology to improve safety in patient care and quality in pharmacy practice.

Overview of Facility/Health System

AdventHealth is a faith-based, non-profit health organization established across multiple states. The Central Florida Division includes eight hospitals ranging from 200-1500 beds and five stand-alone emergency departments.

Significant Projects

Dr. Wang has led the implementation of the Pyxis Anesthesia Stations in the operating rooms across eight separate hospitals between 2018-2019. Currently, his organization is working on the Dose-Edge implementation and EPIC transition and he participates in both projects.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Wang is a member of the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology Advisory Group on Operations and Automation. In addition, he periodically assists with the manuscript reviews for AJHP on any informatics or operations related submissions.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

Dr. Wang often tells the pharmacy students that an informatics specialist needs to excel in operational, clinical, and technical aspects of the pharmacy practice. It is important to understand that and never neglect the didactical studies during pharmacy school and the operational experiences received during IPPE and APPE.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

Becoming involved in ASHP provided Dr. Wang the opportunity to network with other informatics pharmacists across the nation. He was able to learn from their past experiences on various projects and implementations, as well as sharing his own with the group.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP sets the professional standards in many of the health-system pharmacy practices. It also provides a platform where pharmacists could exchange ideas and share their experiences to elevate the pharmacy practice to the next level.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

The practice of pharmacy is evolving, especially in the field of informatics. With new technology, the pharmacy workflow has also changed drastically in the past decade. ASHP has become a place where subject-matter experts could put their bright minds together to come up with guidelines to establish the minimal level of adoption and competency in order to be on-par with the rest of the nation, as well as strategies to implement those changes.
