Inpatient Operations Manager

His Story

Dr. Wong was born and raised in Orange County, CA and grew up wanting to be a baseball player. After an injury in college, Dr. Wong focused his attention on becoming a pharmacist, like his mother and father. Dr. Wong received his Pharm.D. degree from California Northstate University College of Pharmacy and completed his PGY-1/2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). After completing post graduate residency training, Dr. Wong accepted a position at OHSU were he currently works and lives with his beautiful wife in Oregon.

Facility

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is Oregon's only academic medical center and largest employer and a statewide economic powerhouse. The operations include multiple campuses, adult and children’s hospitals, and clinics across Oregon. OHSU has more than 17,000 employees, 562 licensed beds, and cares for more than 300,000 hospital admissions and clinic visits per year.

Recent Significant Projects

Number 1 - In August 2020, OHSU Pharmacy Services implemented TraySafe in the OR pharmacy to automate replenishment and tracking of medications used in pre-configured trays and kits using state of the art camera imaging technology to improve safety and efficiency in the perioperative and multispeciality areas on the main campus.

Number 2 - Historically, the anesthesia controlled substance reconciliation process was manually reconciled by comparing Omnicell waste, issue& return reports  against  Epic Optime documentation. Since implementing the new process in September 2020, inpatient operations  partnered with the compliance and business intelligence teams to automate the anesthesia controlled substance reconciliation process to reduce pharmacist/technician processing time by 3+ hours. The automated process has resulted in improved efficiency, accuracy, and cost savings for the department.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

As an active ASHP member since 2015, Dr. Wong currently serves on the SAG for New & Emerging Leaders and serves as faculty for the Clinical Skills Certificate for International Pharmacy.

What kind of advice would you provide for someone new to your specialty area?

Number 1 – Don’t postpone anything in life. The next day, hour, and minute is not guaranteed so live in the present and choose to be happy in whatever you’re doing both personally and professionally.

Number 2 – Kick ego to the curb. When we remove our ego to be “right”, humility takes its place and we are able to live authentically and be vulnerable to knowledge in all aspects of life.

Number 3 – Be kind. Be empathetic. To everyone.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

Dr. Wong became involved with ASHP so he could learn and collaborate with like-minded professionals to make a difference for society. The ASHP vision aligns with Dr. Wong’s professional vision to ensure he can do everything in whatever role he is in to ensure medication use will be optimal, safe, and effective for all people all of the time.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP is a professional organization that will facilitate networking between colleagues that lead to thought provoking discussions. By way of these discussions, innovative ideas and collaboration ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes within any organization.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP collates best practices from around the world of pharmacy where members are able to efficiently access information that can be applied to their patient population to positively make an impact. Lastly, members are able to observe how thought leaders in the profession lead by example.
