John Hill

His Story

Dr. Hill received his Pharm.D. from the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 2014. He completed a two year Health-System Pharmacy Administration residency at the Cleveland Clinic while obtaining an MS in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from the Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2016. Dr. Hill is currently the Division Director for the Central Pharmacy at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) is large academic medical center located in Baltimore, Maryland. JHH is part of a six hospital health-system, with hospitals located in Maryland, Washington DC, and Florida. The Johns Hopkins Hospital is consistently recognized in US News Rankings Best Hospitals Honor Roll in multiple specialties.

Recent Significant Projects

Dr. Hill has been involved in several resident led research projects, including developing a work at home pharmacist order verification position, an order verification accuracy dashboard and complexity score, and a data-driven review of batch and cartfill times to optimize pharmacy operations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he had the opportunity to partner with a large local distillery in Baltimore, MD to produce hand sanitizer for The Johns Hopkins Health System.

Initial Involvement in ASHP

Dr. Hill is currently a member of the New and Emerging Leaders Advisory Group within the Section of Pharmacy Practice Leaders.

What kind of advice would you provide for someone new to your specialty area?

Dr. Hill would recommend anyone new to management and leadership to identify a diverse group of mentors. Developing relationships with individuals who have prior leadership experiences and skills can help you navigate challenging situations and gain new perspectives. I would also recommend individuals learn from previously published work and stay up to date with new literature. The pharmacy profession is rapidly changing and learning from others within and outside of healthcare can support innovative solutions and application of best practices.

Why did you become involved in ASHP? 

Dr. Hill became involved in ASHP as a pharmacy student to initially learn more about the opportunities and roles available for pharmacists within health-systems. ASHP provided valuable resources which enabled me to identify my interests and continue to learn and grow both personally and professionally.

Advice for Someone New to Practice or Role

ASHP is the best way to jump start professional involvement and be on the forefront of pharmacy practice. By getting involved early, more opportunities will come. The pharmacy profession moves forward as a result of the passion and work dedicated pharmacists have for taking care of patients.

How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?

ASHP provides values to its members in a variety of different ways. ASHP has continually provided me resources for each phase of my professional development as I have progressed through my career. ASHP consistently provides resources and professional connections to assist members in improving their practice site and advancing the profession of pharmacy. It offers opportunities for pharmacists to expand their skills through national involvement in the organization while collaboratively supporting pharmacy practice and addressing broader issues of health-care delivery.

What is the value of ASHP for the profession?

ASHP provides value in a variety of ways to the entire pharmacy profession. Professional meetings and networking events allow for the sharing of ideas and multi-site collaborations. ASHP is highly involved in advocacy and promoting legislative advancements of the profession. ASHP also provides a professional home for all health-system pharmacists and offers opportunities for members to become engaged and actively shape the future of the profession.
