Initial Involvement in ASHP
This is my second term serving on the Value, Quality and Compliance Section Advisory Group of Pharmacy Practice Leaders.
Why did you become involved in ASHP?
I became involved with ASHP during pharmacy school as a means of learning what career paths were available to me.
Advice for Someone New to Specialty Area
Patient care and patient safety is always at the forefront of what we do. I always tell my teams that if they err on the side of the patient, I will always support them. Policies and procedures are to be used as a guidance but we know that healthcare is not always black and white. Every decision we make has a direct impact to our patients. Not one person comes into the hospital that does not receive a medication! It is important to speak up and be a change leader. One of the biggest jobs we have as leaders is to be the voice for our teams. We are here to help remove barriers and get them the resources they need in order to provide the best care possible for the patients.
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
As I transitioned from a new practitioner to a seasoned pharmacist, I continued to see the benefit of being an ASHP member. The networking benefit alone is worth it. I get to meet pharmacy leaders from all walks of life, who work in a variety of healthcare settings. The knowledge one gains from these professional relationships is invaluable.
What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
ASHP provides endless opportunities to get involved to continue advocating for the advancement of the profession. Pharmacists have a wealth of knowledge and continue to play a vital role in in the ever-changing healthcare landscape. It is essential that we continue to grow our profession and ensure our role remains relevant and irreplaceable. As our community grows, ASHP helps be the glue to ensure our collective voices get heard at the highest level.
