Ricky Ogden
His Story
Ricky Ogden received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy in 2007. He completed an ASP accredited PGY-1 residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Following his residency, Ricky practiced in the Emergency Department until 2011 when he assumed the role of Manager for Pharmacy Critical Care Services. Ricky held this role until August 2014 when he became the Assistant Director of Pharmacy with responsibilities for Pharmacy Clinical Services. He completed the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Leadership Academy in 2014. He completed the Executive MBA from the University of Missouri-Kanas City Bloch School of Management in 2016. Ricky is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has been a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Section Advisory Group for Pharmacy Practice Leaders since 2015. Ricky is a co-lead for the Nephrotoxic Acute Kidney Injury Pioneer Cohort for the Solutions for Patient Safety. He has been an active member of the American College for Healthcare Executives since 2015 and currently is serving as Secretary for the Missouri Chapter of ACHE. He has been a member of the Kansas Council of Health-System Pharmacy since 2013 and serves on the Education Committee as well as a two-year term as Director of Education. He also is the Residency Program Director for the PGY-1 program at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Facility
Children's Mercy Hospital is a free-standing, 367-bed academic comprehensive pediatric medical center located in Kansas City, Missouri that provides comprehensive specialty care, research,and medical education to provide care for to patients ages birth to 21 years of age. Children's Mercy Hospital is the primary location for Children's Mercy Kansas City, a comprehensive pediatric health system with multiple locations in Missouri and Kansas. The hospital's primary service area covers a 150-county bi-state area in Missouri and Kansas. Children's Mercy has received national recognition from U.S. News & World Report in ten pediatric specialties for five consecutive years. The hospital was the first in Missouri and Kansas to receive Magnet Recognition for excellence in nursing services from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and has been re-designated four times. In addition to the more than 40 specialty clinics, Children's Mercy has five primary care clinics practices that serve as primary medical homes for children in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Recent Significant Projects
I'm currently working with Solution for Patient Safety to reduce unnecessary acute kidney injury in hospitalized children. With ASHP, I had the great privilege to collaborate with many pharmacy leaders on the creation of the ASHP Guidelines on Preventing Diversion of Controlled Substances in 2016.
Initial Involvement in ASHP
I currently serve on the Strategy and Industry Disrupters Section Advisory Group for Pharmacy Practice Leaders as well as the Educational Steering Committee for the Section for Pharmacy Practice Leaders.
What kind of advice would you provide for someone new to your specialty area?
My advice for someone new to my area of practice is to be forever curious and dedicated to continual learning. The healthcare environment is in a phase of radical transformation and it's critical to stay in-touch with the most current trends.
Why did you become involved in ASHP? I originally became involved in ASHP as I pursued a residency training program. After residency, I learned the critical importance of forming professional networks that I could ask for assistance as well as provide information to.
How would you explain the value of ASHP to a friend or colleague?
The value of ASHP is all members are dedicated to sharing ideas and solutions in a free-flowing manner. There are many resources that you can use to help with your current situation or that can help generate new ideas.What is the value of ASHP for the profession?
