Belmont University College of Pharmacy
Outstanding Professional Development Award Winner (2021 – 2022)
Project Description
We hosted a 3-part post-graduate 101 workshop on a virtual platform to inform and prepare our students for post-graduate opportunities. This workshop was comprised of a P1/P2 and P3/P4 information session led by faculty members, a CV and Letter of Intent Workshop led by a faculty member, after which P4 students could submit their CV for faculty review and individualized feedback, and a Resident Q&A Panel, during which 7 people (PGY-1, PGY-2, and community residents) share about their post-graduate opportunities and answered questions from the students. In all, 89 SSHP members were impacted by this event. The knowledge and experiences they were exposed to through this workshop ultimately helped guide our members in their post-graduate decisions.
Describe how your chapter planned the event?
SSHP has a professional development committee who helped put this project together. In the past we would hold a similar workshop, however it was in-person. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, and the fact that one of our target audiences (P4 student members) may not be able to attend the event in person, we held this event on a virtual platform (Zoom). One of our faculty members hosts a teaching certificate program for local PGY-1/PGY-2 Residents and thus provided contacts for our Resident Q&A Panel.
How did your SSHP Chapter promote the project?
We promoted each event through promotional flyers, which we posted in our weekly newsletter 2 weeks in advance, we spoke about each event at the general body meeting preceding each event, and submitted the event information to our school's Co-Curricular Education Director to be approved as a co-curricular event and for promotion in his newsletter.
When was the event held?
The three events were each held outside of our general body meetings and typically began at 6pm to allow P4 students to attend after their rotations. Each event had, on average, 30 members in attendance.
Which ASHP Strategic Plan priority or goal did the project support?
Facilitating preparation of the pharmacy workforce, maintaining a high level of member satisfaction and value, and growing and retaining an engaged SSHP membership.
