SSHP Membership Size: 142
Featured Program: Practice Advancement Initiative Project
Please be as descriptive as possible, to help us understand the scope, size, and impact of your event:
SSHP Show & Share, hosted by the Student Society of Health-System Pharmacy at Midwestern University, aims to immerse students in the world of hospital devices. This program establishes a vital connection between students and experienced hospitalists. Through a series of engaging and informal sessions, students not only gain a profound understanding of the operation of diverse devices but also receive insights beyond traditional classroom teachings. The goal is to bridge theoretical knowledge and practical application, fostering professional growth and readiness for pharmaceutical careers.
How did you promote the event?
Promotional flyers detailing each series event were posted in campus buildings and online on student social networking sites. Emails were also sent to SSHP member listservs.
Did you include any outside guests to complete this event?
The executive board of Midwestern's SSHP partners with Dr. Mindy Burnworth to enhance student exposure to medical devices. Dr. Burnworth, a seasoned expert, and the SSHP President counseled together on how to utilize her inventory of hospital devices as object lessons for students. She not only generously provides tangible examples of devices and pharmaceuticals for students to handle but also delivers captivating mini-lectures that explain the usefulness of such devices.
What advice do you have for SSHPs attempting to replicate the project you described?
The only incurred cost for these enriching events is approximately $100 - $120 per session, covering the lunches for attendees. To enact on your own campus, rally hospital faculty members from your campus to participate and share their experiences. Choose 4-5 specific specialties to broaden the range of topics presented to students, and gather materials and devices for workshops by asking for volunteer donations from pharmacy staff sites or hospital systems.
What additional information, recommendations, or comments would you like to share with your peers?
Organize your SSHP board to add the interactive “Show & Share Series” to their list of learning events. Additionally, collaborate with local restaurants to secure exclusive discounts on food for event attendees!
