This podcast episode will review the experiences of two clinical pharmacy specialists as they established their own pharmacy practice site. In addition to transitioning from a pharmacy resident to a clinical specialist, each speaker has demonstrated the need for a clinical pharmacist to medical teams who previously practiced without this resource. The speakers will discuss the challenges they faced and how they overcame these barriers.
SPEAKERS
Marley Watson is an oncology clinical pharmacy specialist who works with skin and gastrointestinal cancers at Emory Healthcare – Winship Cancer Institute. She completed a doctorate of pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina. Marley completed PGY1 residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and PGY2 at Novant Health Oncology Specialists where she stayed on for a year after residency. She then relocated to Atlanta, GA to work at Emory and has been here for 4 years.
Tonya Smith is originally from South Carolina and completed two years of residency at University of Utah Health. After a PGY2 in internal medicine, she established a clinical pharmacist role on an inpatient medical oncology team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Last year, she helped establish another clinical pharmacist position within the supportive oncology and survivorship clinic. Tonya is passionate about these clinical areas, as well as precepting and teaching, and wellness and resiliency.
Dr. Jordyn Higgins is a PGY-2 Oncology Pharmacy Resident and Chief Pharmacy Resident at Emory University Hospital Midtown/Emory Winship Cancer Institute. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Emory University Hospital Midtown. After residency, she will practice as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Pharmacy Practice in Oncology at Mercer University College of Pharmacy with a clinical practice site at Emory Winship Cancer Institute Johns Creek. Dr. Higgins is a current member of the Leadership Development Advisory Group of the New Practitioners Forum of ASHP.
