Introduction to Pharmacogenomics for the Health-System Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician

Wednesday, August 25, 2021, 3:00-4:00 pm ET

Clinical pharmacogenomics is the practice of using patient specific genetic information to guide drug therapy selection and dosing in order to improve outcomes, minimize toxicity, and optimize therapeutic efficacy. Pharmacists are well-positioned to lead efforts to develop, implement, and interpret pharmacogenomic testing in clinical practice. Therapeutic guidelines from the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) exist to guide pharmacotherapy decisions when pharmacogenomic information is available. There are several medications and drug classes with guidelines for pharmacogenomic dose optimization including warfarin, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, opioids, simvastatin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. With the wide variety of medications across a spectrum of medical fields with guidelines for pharmacogenomic testing, it is important for health-system pharmacists to have a strong baseline knowledge of the application of pharmacogenomics.  Continuing education credit will be offered for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for this activity.

Activity Fee: Member - Free / Non-Member - Not Available

Objectives

  • Describe the principles of pharmacogenomic testing.
  • Discuss available pharmacogenomic guidelines and resources for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Describe the role of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians providing pharmacogenomic services.

Presenters:

  • Jai N. Patel, Pharm.D., BCOP, CPP, Chair, Cancer Pharmacology & Pharmacogenomics, Associate Professor, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Levine Cancer Institute, Atrium Health
  • Aniwaa Owusu-Obeng, Pharm.D., Clinical Pharmacogenomicist, The Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine, New York, NY

Continuing Education:

ACPEThe American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This knowledge-based activity will provide 1.0 hour (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credits (ACPE#: 0204-0000-21-073-L04-P, 0204-0000-21-073-L04-T).

Continuing pharmacy education (CPE) for this activity will be processed on ASHP's eLearning portal and reported directly to CPE Monitor. After completion of the live webinar, you will process and claim CPE credit online at elearning.ashp.org. Pharmacists will need the enrollment code that will be announced at the end of the webinar and your eProfile ID from NABP to earn CPE credits. Follow the prompts to claim credit within 60 days after completing the activity.
