Kimberly Johnstone

Her Story

Kimberly received her Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Washington. She went on to earn her Pharm.D. degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital. She is currently completing a PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy Resident at St. Louis Children's Hospital with an emphasis in critical care. She aspires to become a Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialist after the completion of her residency.

Overview of Facility/Health System

St. Louis Children's Hospital, a BJC Health System member, is a 402-bed tertiary care facility and teaching hospital affiliated with Washington University Medical School, University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy.

Significant Projects

Kimberly was appointed as the resident member of the Pediatric Section Advisory Group of ASHP. She is currently recording a Therapeutic Thursday podcast comparing the pros and cons of vancomycin AUC:MIC monitoring in pediatric patients.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

As a resident herself, Kimberly is just about to begin her career in pediatric pharmacy. Her advice to pharmacy students interested in pediatric pharmacy residencies is to find the best fit for you in your program. Her preceptors and co-residents are incredible role models and challenge her every day. Residencies provide invaluable opportunities to learn and grow as a new practitioner, and it is such a rewarding investment. One to two years goes by faster than you'd think!

What is your current involvement with ASHP?

Kimberly has been a member of ASHP since she was a pharmacy student. She currently serves as the resident member of the Pediatric Section Advisory Group. Within this Section Advisory Group, she is on the podcast workgroup.

Why did you become involved in ASHP?

Kimberly fell in love with leadership as a pharmacy student, where she served as the president of the UTHSC College of Pharmacy. From early on in her PGY1, she knew that she wanted to continue to grow as a leader during her PGY2. The Pediatric Section Advisory Group's resident appointment was the perfect fit for Kimberly, and she has enjoyed collaborating with pediatric pharmacists across the nation.
