Chair Message August 2018

Dear Members of ASHP’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers,

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as Chair of the Section for 2018-2019.  I would like to recognize Jennifer Tryon (Immediate Past Chair) and Rick Couldry (Outgoing Past Chair) for their dedication and outstanding leadership.  I also want to recognize and thank the other members of the Section’s Executive Committee, Directors-at-Large Phil Brummond and Robert Granko, and Sam Calabrese who recently completed service as outgoing Director-at-Large.  Additionally, we greatly appreciate the important contributions made by our Section Advisory Group leaders and many volunteers, as well as our exceptional ASHP Staff Liaison David Chen.

The Executive Committee continues to focus on key imperatives to advance our mission to foster management skills and effective leadership in pursuit of ASHP’s strategic priorities and goals.  The ongoing work of the Section Advisory Groups, Educational Steering Committee,  and the ASHP Conference for Pharmacy Leaders have provided a solid foundation to deliver education and tools to help our members create strategies to meet the needs of their health systems.  The Section’s appointment notifications have been completed for the 2018-2019 advisory groups and educational steering committee, and our dedicated volunteers will soon be starting their important service to our members.

We have heard your feedback and the Executive Committee recognizes the need to develop new methodology and networking avenues to help our members keep up to date with market trends and “hot topics.” Hot topics may include issues such as: site of care market trends, insurer vertical integration, 340B policy, technician workforce planning, growth and building sustainable business models, opioid stewardship, and sterile compounding to name a few. At our June summer meeting, the Executive Committee discussed innovative methods to accomplish this goal. The intent of these discussions is to improve resources supporting members’ strategic planning and communication with their organization’s pharmacy and executive teams.

Recent and upcoming resources and education developed by our Section members include:

This fall the Executive Committee will be working on revisions to the Section’s Strategic Plan to incorporate evolving Section priorities.  As the health system market continues to change, our priorities must evolve to meet the full spectrum of needs from small to multi-hospital pharmacies including leadership development for all layers of our organizations.  As part of this continuous improvement process we  have prioritized ways to engage and partner with our health-system pharmacy administration residents and past Section leaders who bring wisdom and transformational ideas to make certain we both manage the present well, while positioning ourselves to grow and thrive in the future.

In closing, we invite you to please continue to share your ideas with us and provide feedback on how we are serving you.  On behalf of our entire Executive Committee, we pledge to continue to be open, innovative and nimble as we partner with our Section Advisory Groups and leverage insights and wisdom from our rising and past leaders to pursue new ways to bring value to you... our members. Your feedback is important in this process, so please contact us via email sections@ashp.org  on key issues that you would like the Section to focus on.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you this year and I look forward to hearing from you over the next year.

Best regards,

Kristine Gullickson, Pharm.D., M.B.A., FASHP
