Chair Message March 2019

March 2019

Happy (almost) spring to you all. I have several exciting updates to share this month.  The SPPM Executive Committee has been working over the past few months to draft significant updates to the Section’s Mission, Vision, Tagline and Strategic Plan.  As background work, we completed a SWOT analysis and strategic planning opinion survey with our SAG members, as well as past and current Executive Committee leaders.  I want to extend a special thank you to Bob Granko, Phil Brummond, Kenny Kang, Emily Sis, Marshall Johnson, and Elizabeth Rodman for their leadership in developing and summarizing the feedback survey inputs to inform our work.

The common theme we heard from our members was simple – SPPM is THE home for ALL leaders.  Our aim is to reach ALL leaders in ALL settings with our Section’s programming, resources and networking opportunities. To support this aim, I’m excited to announce our updated SPPM vision statement, mission statement, and tag line.

*New* SPPM Vision: All pharmacy leaders are empowered to advance practice and patient care.

*New* SPPM Mission: We provide a professional community to develop and support all leaders, improve safety and quality, advocate for practice advancement, and optimize business practices to meet the demands of the changing health care landscape.

*New* SPPM Tag Line: Lead. Develop. Advance.

This foundational restructuring work also included significant updates to the Section’s strategic plan in order to:

  • Respond to member feedback from both the broader SPPM member needs and satisfaction survey conducted by ASHP and the SPPM SAG and Committee member SWOT-focused survey conducted in 2018.
  • Provide improved opportunities to address needs identified for leadership development at different levels of career development such as HSPA resident, new leaders, experienced leaders, directors of pharmacy, and the various multi- hospital system level leaders
  • Ensure issues addressed, projects & resources developed, and volunteer opportunities aligned with the Section members from all size hospitals and health systems.
  • Build on the strengths of the past five years of our advisory groups and the excellent work accomplished.
  • Continually adapt to the changing health care environment facing our profession and members.

The outcome of this effort has resulted in a re-organization and re-naming of the Section’s advisory groups. This renaming has also included changes to the charges of the groups including some of the similar charges of past advisory groups, as well as additions/deletions based on feedback from members and observations of groups’ successes. The names of the new groups are:

  • Advisory Group On New and Emerging Leaders
  • Advisory Group for Frontline Leaders
  • Advisory Group On Value, Quality and Compliance
  • Advisory Group Of Business Development and System Integration
  • Advisory Group On Strategy and Industry Disruption
  • Educational Steering Committee
  • Multi-Hospital Pharmacy Executive Committee

We hope that these changes resonate with each and every one of you. Thank you for your many contributions to the Section, and we look forward to working with you to test these foundational changes as we strive to better serve you, ALL leaders of our Section.
