Chair Message September 2018

September 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Back to school, fall sports, 2019 budget preparation kick off and the ASHP Conference for Pharmacy Leaders … fall season is officially upon us!  Fall season also likely means preparing for the “fourth quarter surge” in our hospitals and health systems as we plan for a large influx of patient volume through the end the year.  The surge analogy also applies to the myriad of activities ahead for the Section over the next year as the Executive Committee, Section Advisory Groups, Educational Steering Committee and HSPA volunteers kick off their work to support our members.

How can you get involved? Our existing groups are the primary volunteer opportunity but our Executive Committee also re-assesses the needs of the Section’s members which can result in new groups being formed.  Based on Section member feedback, we formed a Sterile Compounding workgroup last year and will launch a new workgroup this year to develop a strategy to support the needs of the many new multi-hospital pharmacy leadership roles.

These are just a few examples of how we use your feedback to shape our course, so please continue to engage and share your ideas.

In other SPPM news:

  • Our Executive Committee roster is now finalized with the election of our new Chair-Elect, Sam Calabrese, and Director-at-Large-Elect, Lindsey Amerine.  Congratulations and our thanks to all of the candidates on the slate this year for your willingness to volunteer your time and leadership to the Section.
  • The Section Advisory Groups, Educational Steering Committee, and workgroups started meeting this month to develop their charges for the upcoming year. Our five SAGs include: Leadership Development, Innovation Management, Management of the Pharmacy Enterprise, Patient Care Quality and the Multi-hospital Pharmacy Executive group.  Thank you to the Chair, Vice Chairs and, members for your commitment to the Section.  We look forward to partnering with these talented leaders to achieve our goals.

    • The Conference for Pharmacy Leaders plenary and breakout sessions will highlight timely hot topics affecting leaders across the Section including:
      • Leading through an ambiguous healthcare landscape and navigating the challenges of clinical integration, PBMs, and rising drug prices

    • Women in Pharmacy Leadership Networking Session: This session is part of ASHP’s continuum of opportunities for networking on important topics on leadership, practice issues, and work-force development.
    • HSPA Residents: The conference offers valuable networking and breakout activities for our HSPA residents including a  Leadership Development Program for an evening of inspiration, conversation and networking.  On behalf of the Executive Committee, we want to extend a special thank you to our speakers: Mike Sanborn, Sara White and David Zilz; and the volunteers that are making this event a success.
    • NEW for 2018 Poster Session: A poster session dedicated to the practice issues facing pharmacy leaders. This great addition to the Conference will provide another opportunity for attendees to network and share their success stories.

I wish you all well in navigating the challenges and opportunities ahead this fall and into 2019.  Thank you for all you do for the Section and in supporting our patients and each other.

Best,
